Eight poisoned trees in Drayton and Fitzroy streets, Nanango, had only just been trimmed by the South Burnett Regional Council, Cr Roz Frohloff said on Tuesday.

The trees were part of the recent Nanango CBD streetscape project.

“Council has only just recently trimmed these Leopardwood trees in response to a request,” Cr Frohloff said.

“Now with these trees dying; it is just a total waste of ratepayers’ money. The actions of those responsible is just incomprehensible.”

A Council spokesperson said the trees’ replacement would be a significant cost to the community and ratepayers.

And as some chemicals used for poisoning plants are residual, it was likely the soil would contain a level of contamination.

This would mean when Council replaces the trees, the soil would also need to be replaced.

Mayor Keith Campbell said the thoughtless and selfish act had affected many in the community.

“It was inexcusable,” he said.

“I encourage anybody who has seen or heard anything in relation to this vandalism to please report it to the police or Crime Stoppers.”
