NBN cable layers roll out fibre infrastructure … this sight probably won’t be seen in KIngaroy until 2019 (Photo: NBN)

South Burnett residents wondering when the NBN will reach their homes or workplaces should be pleased by a major update to the NBN website announced on Monday.

The address checker function has been updated to say when the rollout is planned for a certain address (most of Kingaroy, for example, seems to be January-June 2019, with the good news that the town is now slated for fibre-to-the-kerb).

However, NBN warned the rollouts required “a certain level of flexibility”, so the website would continue to be “refreshed” to reflect any changes that occurred.

“The number one question we get asked is ‘when am I getting the NBN?’ and today’s update to our website provides the answer to that very question,” NBN’s Chief Customer Officer John Simon said.

“On average we are making the network available to around 60,000 new homes and businesses each week, so it stands to reason that there is growing interest in when the network will be available across the country.

“With this in mind, we have moved away from telling people when we’ll be building in their neighbourhood to when they can contact their retailer to buy a service.

“The change means we can better meet the interests of our retail customers as well as the Australian homes and businesses which will benefit from fast broadband services powered by the NBN network.”

According to NBN, the rollout has now reached more than one in three Australian homes and businesses and will be half complete by mid-year. It is due to be finished by 2020.
