Firefighters extinguished a grassfire burning on both sides of the New England Highway south of Cooyar on Thursday afternoon.

The fire was located near the Oakey-Cooyar intersection.

Six fire crews attended the scene.

At 1:30pm, the fire posed no threat to property but there was heavy smoke in the area.

Motorists in the area were advised to drive to conditions and keep alert for emergency services in the area.

A man aged in his 50s was taken to Kingaroy Hospital in a stable condition after a quad bike crash at Maidenwell on Thursday afternoon.

Ambulance paramedics were called to the private residence on the Maidenwell-Bunya Mountains Road about 12:45pm.

He was treated for suspected back injuries before being transported.

UPDATE May 6: The man was later airlifted by the RACQ CareFlight helicopter to Toowoomba Hospital for further treatment.

Gympie police are searching for a thief who stole a solar-powered electric fence from a property at Kandanga between April 9-30.

Anyone who believes they’ve seen the orange/yellow coloured fence – either for sale or recently erected on a property – should call Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000.
