“Extremely happy” … that’s the verdict from Murgon Show Society president / secretary Aileen Williams wrapping up the 91st Murgon Show.

Last year’s show was knocked around by floods; this year’s faced drought but even so, Aileen is smiling.

“Numbers were definitely up,” she said.

“Was it the weather? Or did people just want variety? But Murgon people as usual pulled together once again to help us.

“It’s also a great social occasion.

“We are extremely happy. We had great entertainment.

“There was an excellent number of horses. Entries were up in hacks and showjumping.

“Cattle were down – that is to be expected because people are finding it very hard – but even so we had 150 head in the stud cattle and 50 in the prime beef.

“For the first time in 91 shows, we had to knock back 70 birds in the poultry (because of the number of entries).”

The show was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss.

After the day’s activities wound down, a good crowd packed in for the traditional evening rodeo, which featured a total of almost $3000 in prize money.
