96th Annual Burrandowan Picnic Races
The 96th annual Burrandowan Picnic Races - a South Burnett tradition since 1922 and one of Queensland's most famous picnic race meetings - will be held at the Burrandowan Race Track 66km southwest of Kingaroy from 9:00am this morning (when clay target shooting blasts into action) until very late tonight (when the last exhausted race-goer drops off to sleep). This first race in this year's five-race program will leave the barriers at 1:00pm and there'll also be a Fashions on the Field competition with more than $4000 in prizes; a fully licensed bar operating from around 11:00am; good country food available all day from the race club's Chahpingah Cafe; other food stalls in the grounds; and the traditional Burrandowan pit-fired barbecues and sizzling steaks at night. There's also a great afternoon High Tea running in the race club's hall, and gourmet picnic hampers available for pick-up, but you need to book either (or both) of these in advance from the race club's website. This year attendees can dance the night away under the stars with entertainers Risa, or take advantage of shuttle buses that will be running from Kingaroy to Burrandowan and back again for the benefit of those who'd rather party hard than drive (you can get full details about these on the Burrandowan Picnic Races website too). Accommodation packages and free overnight camping at the track are available as well. Entry to this year's Races is $25 per head for adults but under-18s are free. More information? Phone Burrandowan Races secretary Carolyn Stone on (07) 4164-8147 or email her. You can also get more information on the Burrandowan Picnic Races website

Most breeds of birds will be represented - so if you like birds, this is one show you really shouldn't miss! Admission is just $2. More details? Saturday Soccer - Nanango
Due to some player shortages, this week's football schedule has been rearranged and two of the matches originally scheduled for today were played in Kingaroy last night. But if you still fancy some senior Saturday football, the first place to go is the Burnett Street sports fields in Nanango, where home team Panthers will play Gunners at 3:00pm. After this, jump in your car and drive to Tom Alford Oval in Oliver Bond Street, Kingaroy for a Women's Division match between Wests and Barambah which will kick off at 4:00pm. A canteen will be running at both venues and spectators are very welcome. Meanwhile, Junior Soccer will resume at Nanango today after its long weekend break, and will feature the first round of the Inter Club Challenge for the U12/13 and Cadet age groups between South Burnett, Dalby and Chinchilla. The Inter Club is a round-robin competition and the first games will start on the park at 8:00am.
Proston Men's Shed
The Proston Men's Shed will be meeting at the old railway station building at Railway Park in Rodney Street, Proston for its regular Saturday morning meeting today, kicking off with a cuppa at 9:00am. The meeting will run until around noon, and new members are always welcome. More details? Phone Geoff on 0439-694-000.
Saturday Rugby League - Nanango
With many juniors playing in the 47th Battalion competition, there will be no junior competition games played this weekend. But Rugby League fans should head to Fred Kassulke Oval off the D'Aguilar Highway south of Nanango where there'll be three junior scratch games between Kingaroy's Red Ants and Nanango's Stags, with U6s playing at 11:30am; U8s at 12:30pm and U12s at 1:30pm (a women's match between the South Burnett and Caboolture planned for 1:30pm has been abandoned after Caboolture forfeited, so all the scratch matches were pushed out to new times on Friday afternoon). However, there'll be two A-grade matches later to make up for all of this: Murgon's Mustangs will play the Stags at 3:00pm, and this will be followed by a clash between Cherbourg's Hornets and Kingaroy's Red Ants at 5:30pm. A canteen will be operating at the grounds and spectators are very welcome.

Today's program will feature Maiden, Junior, Juvenile and Novice Drafts, followed by a Restricted Open under lights in the evening (tomorrow will see the finals of the Novice Draft along with an Open Draft). Admission to the campdraft is free for spectators and there'll be a bar, music and hot meals available in the grounds. There'll also be free camping available if you want to stay overnight. Today's campdraft is the last in the South Burnett (or nearby regions) until the Bell Campdraft on July 7-8, so if you have guests keen to see some great horse action, this will be their last opportunity for several months.
