The date has been announced for the by-election for the Federal seat of Groom, caused by the resignation of the John McVeigh.

Speaker Tony Smith told Federal Parliament on Thursday that the polling day will be Saturday, November 28.

Rolls will close on Monday, November 2, and nominations on November 5.

Dr McVeigh announced his resignation, effective immediately, on September 18.

The former State Agriculture Minister swapped to Federal politics and was elected to the Toowoomba-based seat in 2016.

Before entering State politics, Dr McVeigh served as a councillor on Toowoomba Regional Council from 2008-12.

In his resignation letter, Dr McVeigh said he was leaving Federal Parliament to spend more time with his wife Anita, who has been ill.

He has since taken up a position in Toowoomba as executive director at the Institute for Resilient Regions at the University of Southern Queensland.

Groom is considered to be a safe Coalition seat.
