Woolworths have announced they will put an end to the 12 month expiry date on gift cards

March 8, 2018

Woolworths have announced they will axe expiry dates on gift cards – not just on new cards, but also on cards already issued.

Previously, gift cards had a one year expiry date.

However from March 31, all customers holding active Woolworths Group gifts cards will be able use them at any time.

The change will also apply to all Woolworths cards purchased on or after March 31.

Many customers have been caught out by failing to redeem gift cards before their expiry date, but will now have the flexibility to use them whenever they please.

The move comes ahead of foreshadowed changes to expiry dates which have been advocated by consumer groups.

The NSW government has introduced a mandatory minimum three year expiry period for gift cards and gift vouchers sold to consumers in NSW, which becomes effective at the end of the month.

Other states have yet to follow suit, but are expected to follow NSW’s lead.
