The Federal election race for Maranoa has expanded from four candidates to five.

Charleville grazier Rick Gurnett will be contesting the seat of Maranoa for Katter’s Australian Party on July 2.

Mr Gurnett is a former LNP member and branch president.

He failed to win pre-selection for the seat against David Littleproud.

Announcing his candidature, Mr Gurnett said he made the change because he believed Maranoa has been forgotten by major parties.

“KAP is the only party that will stand up to protect landholders’ rights and the only party that will protect small business and industry in this State,” he said.

“KAP is determined to restore good government and a fair go for regional Queensland, and that is why I have signed up.”

Mr Gurnett said he had a strong sense of pride in Maranoa and believed his life experiences had given him a strong understanding of many of the problems the electorate is facing.

He has worked in small business and agriculture in the electorate for more than 40 years, is married and is father of three.
