An idea originally dreamed up to fill an unexpected vacancy in the Kingaroy Art Gallery’s annual exhibition schedule will have its latest outing this Saturday … having grown to more than six times its original size in just three years.

The concept for the annual “South Burnett On The Wall Art Exhibition” was created by curator Fiona Kemp in 2012 when one of the exhibitions she’d arranged for the Main Gallery had to be postponed, leaving a gaping hole in the gallery’s busy schedule.

Fiona thought it might be a good idea to have an exhibition made up solely of recent works by South Burnett artists to showcase the variety of talent in the region.

In its first year, the idea attracted just a handful of artists to take part. Last year, numbers increased slightly, and so did the range of works on display.

And this Saturday morning, guests who attend the exhibition’s official opening at 10:30am will be treated to an astonishing range of artworks executed by 36 local artists, in media ranging from traditional painting through to photography, paper tole, hand-made rugs and more.

“I’m very proud of this year’s exhibition and I think visitors to the Gallery will be too,” Fiona said.

“It provides a very good snapshot of where many of our region’s best artists are at right now.”

Gallery assistant Rebecca Graham agreed.

“We have some incredibly talented artists in the South Burnett and this exhibition has some really lovely works,” she said.

“Some of the artists only have one work to represent their style while others have a couple, but they all show great skill.”

Artists who have works in this month’s exhibition come from all parts of the region including Murgon, Hivesville, Kingaroy and Nanango.

The exhibition – which is free to view – will remain on display at the Kingaroy Art Gallery until the end of the month. The gallery is open from 9:00am to 4:30pm on weekdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm on weekends.
