A Benarkin man suffered a serious eye injury this morning after the blade from an angle grinder shattered in his face.

A RACQ CareFlight helicopter spokesman said the man, aged in his 30s, was sharpening mower blades using an angle grinder when it is believed the blade disintegrated.

A helicopter team from the Sunshine Coast was immediately tasked to the scene, landing at Benarkin State School oval just after 10:00am.

The RACQ CareFlight’s medical team, including a critical-care doctor and flight paramedic, provided emergency treatment on-scene before flying the patient to the Royal Brisbane Hospital for further treatment.

The man travelled in a serious but stable condition.
