South Burnett police officers, emergency services personnel and community members gathered at Our Lady of Dolours Catholic Church in Yarraman on Friday afternoon to mark National Police Remembrance Day.

The day commemorates the sacrifice of the 140 officers who have lost their lives in Queensland in the line of duty since 1861.

Special mention was made of officers who have lost their lines helping others.

Also highlighted was the service of former Yarraman officer Senior Sergeant Perry Irwin, shot dead 10 years ago at Caboolture.

Prayers were also said for Sergeant Gary Hamrey who is recovering in hospital after being shot in the face early on Friday morning on the Gold Coast.

The service was led by Dalby Burnett Patrol chaplain Rev John Selwood.

Dalby Burnett Patrol Inspector Michael Bianchi read the Act of Remembrance and Roll of Honour.

The service was organised by Senior Sergeant Lance Guteridge, officer-in-charge at Murgon Police Station.

NB: Police Remembrance Day is observed on September 29, the Feast Day of the patron saint of police, Michael the Archangel, who is traditionally depicted as fighting evil
