South Burnett Regional Council has prepared a wrap-up of official community events it will be sponsoring around the region to commemorate Australia Day, January 26:
- Blackbutt
The Friends of Cultcha Group in Blackbutt will be hosting a Big Aussie Breakfast at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall between 8.00am and 11.00am. There’ll be traditional Australian games including a horse shoe toss, rolling pin toss, boot toss and more, along with live music from the Taromeo Country Music Club.
- Boondooma
Boondooma Homestead will be hosting an evening event starting at 5:00pm with a flag-raising ceremony followed by a sausage sizzle and live entertainment featuring Buddy Thomson, Lynne Bennett and others. Buses will be leaving from the the Wondai Visitor Information Centre (3:30pm), Murgon Visitor Information Centre (3:30pm), Hivesville Pub (3:50pm), Proston Town Hall (4:00pm).
- Kingaroy
Kingaroy’s Australia Day celebrations will be held at the Town Hall Forecourt with breakfast from 7.00am. There’ll be face-painting for children; bush poetry and live music by Matt Phillips as well as a whip-cracking display by Paul Simms. At 9.00am, a flag-raising ceremony will be performed by the Australian Army Cadet Unit followed by recognition of Australia Day Award winners and Affirmation Ceremony. Guest speaker will be Martin Boettcher. A vocal quartet will perform during the official ceremony. Traditional pie and lamington eating competitions will follow the official ceremony, with both senior and junior categories. The morning will close with morning tea and Cane Toad Racing, will all proceeds going to charity.
- Murgon
The Queensland Dairy & Heritage Museum Murgon has put together a full plate of Australia Day activities for you to participate in. The day will start with a breakfast at 7.00am, followed by a ceremony at 9.00am with guest speaker Ian McConnell (Australian Rural Ambassador finalist). There’ll also be bush poetry readings as well as as live entertainment by the Stolzenberg Brothers, a flag-raising ceremony and a morning tea (billy tea & damper).
- Nanango
The Nanango Historical Society will be hosting a breakfast from 7.00am at Nanango Showgrounds. The breakfast will be followed by a flag-raising ceremony and the singing of the Australian National Anthem, and then a variety of games and entertainment including the traditional dog high jump, male and female tug-o-war contests, junior tug-o-war contest, live music, tales and yarns, bush poets, watermelon, tea, scones, great coffee and ice cold soft drinks. There will also be lots of children’s activities available, and a stack of prizes to be won (thanks to local sponsors).
- Proston
The Proston Scout Group is hosting a flag-raising as well as providing free billy tea and damper at their Scout Den in Rodney Street, Proston, from 2.00pm. There’ll be games and activities and cold drinks will be on sale. The new Scout Den will also be the officially opened during the afternoon’s celebrations.
- Wondai
A community breakfast will be held at Wondai’s Coronation Park from 7.00am onwards this morning in conjunction with the Wondai Markets. The breakfast is always a popular event with swarms of people in attendance, and this year there’ll be live entertainment including the Wondai Town & District Band, an Australian Citizen Affirmation Ceremony and a flag-raising ceremony.
