Road Works
The SBRC will spend a record amount on road works in the region over the coming 12 months

July 15, 2012

The South Burnett Regional Council will spend more than 58 per cent of its 2012-13 Budget repairing and upgrading the region’s roads, water supply and waste water infrastructure.

The $42 million in SBRC outlays will be topped this year up by an extra $47 million from the State and Federal governments for flood damage repairs.

This will bring total spending on infrastructure repairs and improvements to $89 million over the coming 12 months – a record for the four-year-old Council.

But even without the one-off flood assistance monies, the forecast expenditure represents a 20.5 per cent increase on last year’s outlays.

In handing down the SBRC’s 2012-13 Budget last Wednesday, July 11, South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said that “during the election campaign the state of our roads was clearly the number one priority raised by South Burnett residents”.

He said this year’s Budget was “acting on our promise to deliver”.

Apart from roads, the Council will also spend $10.7 million on regional water and waste water assets.

This represents the start of a multi-year program to fully upgrade the region’s 70-year-old water and sewerage infrastructure, which is rapidly approaching the end of its working life.

The Council estimates the total cost of fully upgrading these assets could run as high as $80 million.

“No one pays much attention when when you turn on your tap and water comes out or your toilet flushes properly,” the Mayor told the Budget meeting, “but everyone notices when they don’t. So we need to work on this area to ensure that everything keeps working as it should into the future.”

Over the coming year the Council will also spend $2.2 million on plant and vehicle replacement
