Do the right thing and Nanango’s boys and girls in blue will give you a ticket to go into a draw to win one of four $200 shopping vouchers

December 1, 2016

Drivers who get pulled over by Nanango police for a random breath test will get a ticket … but only if they blow zero.

The ticket is an opportunity to go into a draw to win one of four $200 shopping vouchers.

This is the second year that Nanango Police have run “Project Sober Roads” in the run-up to Christmas.

The project is being run in conjunction with the Nanango Community Men’s Shed who successfully sourced funding from Heritage Community Branch at Nanango.

Officer-in-charge of Nanango Police, Sergeant Jason Newton, said 500 tickets had been printed.

From now until mid-December, drivers who are tested by Nanango police and record “zero” on the roadside test will be handed a voucher as reward.

All the driver has to do is fill in his details on the tickets and drop it into the box on the front counter of Nanango Police Station.

There are two $200 SupaIGA Nanango vouchers to be won plus a $200 voucher from Airds Hardware and a $200 voucher from Nanango Motors.

Sgt Newton said the key strategy behind the project was to raise awareness about impaired driving.

“We want people to have a conversation about it, talk with each other,” he said.

“Drink and drug driving is not a policing problem. It is a community problem that requires a community solution.

“We want to become agents of change.”

He said that in 2014-15, 30 per cent of local traffic crashes involved an impaired driver.

“In calendar year 2016, it has been substantially lower,” he said.

RBT units began handing out the Project Sober Roads tickets to motorists on Wednesday.

The prize draw will take place at Nanango Police Station on December 21.
