A bolide entering the earth’s atmosphere (Wikipedia)

September 26, 2016

Police have fielded calls from the public about a bright flash in the sky which occurred about 8:30pm on Monday.

A police media spokesman said people had rung in with reports, especially from the Turkey Beach area, south of Gladstone.

Social media also quickly filled with sightings, with reports coming in from Mackay, Bowen, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Agnes Water, Boyne Island, Tannum Sands, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay.

Some commenters reported hearing a rumbling noise and said they felt their house shake, like an earth tremor.

The bright light, most likely an exploding meteor or bolide, was seen as far inland as Emerald.

And there was at least one sighting in the South Burnett:

“Yes! looking north-ish from Cushnie … my mum saw a huge bright something belting down out of the sky that we assumed was a whopper of a meteor out that way!”

  1. I happened to be outside at the right time & saw it too. It was very colourful & unlike any falling star or meteor shower I have seen before.
