Member for Callide Jeff Seeney ... moving spill motion

May 4, 2016

Member for Callide Jeff Seeney confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that he will move a spill motion on Friday against Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg.

The motion will be moved at a special LNP party meeting on Friday morning called by Mr Springborg.

The next party room meeting had been due to be held on Monday ahead of the resumption of State Parliament on Tuesday, but was brought forward after speculation about a leadership challenge grew.

The meeting is now scheduled to start at 11:00am on Friday and run until noon.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington will be travelling to Brisbane to attend the compulsory meeting.

Mr Seeney emailed LNP MPs on Wednesday to advise them he would be moving the spill motion.

He said it was appropriate as the current leadership team had been decided in “extraordinary circumstances”.

“While I will not be a candidate for any position I believe putting this question to the special party room on Friday will resolve this leadership issue and allow us to move forward towards winning the next election,” he wrote in the email.

“I believe this is the most appropriate course of action as the current leadership structure was decided upon some 14 months ago in extraordinary circumstances after a devastating election result and at a time when some believed there was a chance of the LNP forming a minority government with the support of the cross bench members.

“That is clearly no longer the case and the party must now consider whether the current leadership structure is appropriate to contest the next State election.”

UPDATE: Member for Everton and former Shadow Education Minister Tim Mander tendered his resignation from the Opposition front bench late on Wednesday afternoon and declared his intention to run for the leadership.
