A number of trees were stripped of branches around the old Goodger Store by Thursday night’s storm

This week’s storms in the South Burnett brought some welcome rain to parts of the region, only drops to others … and belted parts with hail and wild wind.

Rainfall totals were highly variable.

Readers reported 55mm of rain at Coolabunia, 50mm at Wondai, 36mm in Kingaroy, 30mm in Murgon, 24mm at Nanango and 27mm in Blackbutt from Thursday night’s storm.

Large hail fell at Ellesmere and several roads in the area were blocked by fallen trees.

Council workers and SES volunteers worked to clear the area early on Friday morning.

Thursday’s storm also struck hard at Goodger, with trees shredded and some homes damaged.

The SES were called to assist with major roof damage to several buildings in the area and Ergon reported storm damage at Ellesmere, Goodger and Brooklands.

An aircraft was flipped onto its roof at Kingaroy Airport.

Another string of small storms crossed the South Burnett on Friday afternoon bringing more lightning, thunder and rain.

This time the more southern towns in the region seem to have been hit the hardest with back-to-back storms bringing pelting rain and hail to Yarraman.

The first hit about 5:20pm and dropped pea-size hail around town.

About 20 minutes later, larger hail and heavy rain belted the town for another 10 minutes.

Drivers hastily put their cars under cover on footpaths in Margaret Street to protect them from hail damage.

Heavy rain, hail and lightning strikes were reported in the Blackbutt and Benarkin areas.

Short but heavy falls also hit parts of Wondai, Kingaroy and Nanango and storm damage caused blackouts at Booie, Cushnie and Brovinia.

More storms have been predicted for the South Burnett for both Saturday and Sunday.
