The South Burnett Readers’ Cup may not be as well known as the Melbourne Cup or the Caulfield Cup, but it’s equally well-contested, always attracting a strong field of would-be champions.
This year 85 students from seven State schools across the South Burnett took part.
The teams of young readers gathered in the Kingaroy State School library on Tuesday to test their memories and comprehension skills.
The Readers’ Cup challenges teams of five to answer questions about specific books they have read.
The books in the competition this year were: “Gallipoli” by Kerry Greenwood and Annie White, “Weirdo” by Anh Do, “The Last King of Angkor Wat” by Graeme Base, “The Kensington Reptilarium” by N.J. Gemmell, and “Escape From Wolfhaven Castle” by Kate Forsyth.
Each team had just 30 seconds to write down the correct answer, 15 seconds less than last year!
Kingaroy State School teacher / librarian Julie Boyle said the competition was very close and four tie-breaker rounds had to be played to find an eventual winning team.
Blackbutt State School Team 1 came in first, just ahead of runners-up Taabinga State School Team 1.
The members of the winning team each won a book each and a McDonald’s voucher, plus a pack of five books for their school. They also took home a trophy for their school and the school’s name will be added to the perpetual trophy.
Blackbutt State School will now represent the South Burnett at the State Final of the Readers’ Cup which will be held at the State Library of Queensland during the Brisbane Writers’ Festival in September.
The runners-up from Taabinga State School were also presented with a book each.
