In the pink … some of the girls and women taking part in Sunday’s training with club officials

February 12, 2015

The focus on women in sport has shifted to football with the first of three “Pink Soccer” days planned for the South Burnett held in Kingaroy on Sunday.

All footy codes seem to be targeting girls and women this year, with the Saints AFL club putting together a women’s team, a women’s rugby league team mooted, and now Football South Burnett going all out to encourage more girls and women into the game.

The free “girls only” training days are aimed at girls and women aged 12 and over.

Twenty-three participants were put through their paces on Tom Alford Oval on Sunday by 2013 Queensland Coach of the Year Karen Thomas, from the South West Queensland Thunder; Australian representative futsal goal-keeper Katlin Peterson, from Oakey; and SWQ Thunder Open women’s coach Craig Burgess.

They also did fitness training with Belinda Lewis from Fresh PT at Morayfield.

The training has been funded by the State Government’s recent “Get Playing” funding round which focussed on women’s and girls’ participation in sport.

The next sessions will be held at:

  • Nanango – March 1, 9:00am at Nanango Soccer Fields (registration closes February 23); and
  • Wondai – March 8, 9:00am at Wondai Soccer Grounds (registration closes March 1)

To register, contact Sarah Vanderkolk 0429-686-001, Danielle Maudsley 0402-466-681 or Emma Sippel 0487-183-658.

UPDATE February 25:

The “Girls In Pink” football training day which had been scheduled for this Sunday (March 1) in Nanango has been postponed.

Organisers said today this was due to illness and a change in commitments for some of the key people involved.

However, the day will go ahead at a later date, with a date yet to be announced.

The “Girls In Pink” day scheduled for Wondai on March 8 will still be going ahead.

Some of the younger players get some one-on-one coaching
The older players weren’t forgotten, either, with skills training
