Murgon residents have been asked to conserve water after a major breakdown at the Murgon water treatment plant.

A South Burnett Regional Council spokesman said this afternoon the breakdown affected the inlet pumps that supply water to the facility.

Temporary Emergency Water Restrictions for the Murgon town area have been invoked.

Council is asking residents to restrict water use to internal and essential external use only, such as cleaning of windscreens, pet enclosures or emergency purposes.

Watering of gardens and lawns is not permitted.

“Council is endeavouring to repair the infrastructure as a matter of urgency and will advise of any change in the situation,” the spokesman said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your patience.”

UPDATE March 2: Council advised this morning that the emergency water use restrictions in Murgon have been lifted.
