If you live in Yarraman or Cooyar – and are interested in addressing youth sector issues – then Toowoomba Regional Council’s Youth Advisory Committee wants to hear from you.

The Council is calling for nominations from the wider community for six positions on the committee. There are three positions available for people aged over 25 and three for people under 25.

Environment and Community Committee chair Cr Geoff McDonald said nominations were being sought from people across the region to inform Council about specific youth sector-related issues at a local, regional and State level.

“Nominations close on December 19,” Cr McDonald said. “The committee already has a number of representatives from a range of youth services organisations … now we are looking for broader community input.”

The committee, which has been operating since 2013, has investigated a number of issues and provided avenues for young people to have a say into Council processes.

“One of these initiatives has been the development of the TRC Youth Leaders program which involved the participation of 50 young people from across the region,” Cr McDonald said.

“The Youth Leaders provided an opportunity for young people to have a say on activities, issues and opportunities for the region while also encouraging them to develop activities that could have a positive impact on their community or the wider region.

“The group has also explored other avenues for youth to have a say and started to investigate the changes to funding for the youth sector and subsequent impacts for the region’s youth.”

Cr McDonald said he also saw the committee as a vehicle for promoting a better understanding of these issues to the wider community.

Nomination letters can be emailed to rebecca.schroder@toowoombaRC.qld.gov.au or sent to PO Box 3021, Toowoomba Village Fair, 4350.
