Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has pledged that Stanwell – operators of the Tarong power stations and Meandu coal mine – will not be sold by Labor if she becomes Premier after the next State election.

Ms Palaszczuk made the commitment while meeting with Stanwell workers yesterday near Rockhampton.

“Campbell Newman promised he wouldn’t sell off Queenslanders electricity assets, yet now he is,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“My commitment to the people of Queensland, especially those in this region that rely on the State’s electricity assets for employment, is that only Labor will protect these assets from privatisation.”

  1. So Labor will provide Kingaroy a new hospital out of normal capital expenditure? We’ll just go back to getting nothing in this region again like we did for 20 years!

  2. Are we to allow the formation of a autocratic society relinquishing our authority to determine the direction and future of assets and property now owned by the peoples of this state to peruse a stimulus package driven by inherently corrupt ideology. This will not bring relief to a economy when its people’s financial future rests on selling viable government assets to build and maintain infrastructure that inevitably must be replaced in time. Queensland’s health services and road systems have been neglected for a considerable time as political expediency as undue influences have redirected appropriate resources elsewhere. This is a short term fix to a long term problem that will inevitably lead to higher costs to the population. Escalating fees and charges both private and governmental as seen in southern states bear testament to privatization and the ability of governments to deliver savings. Taxation has increased along with power prices and to think this government can reverse that trend is naive at best but foolhardy in one’s application of common sense.
