A family reunion went horribly wrong for a West Australian man visiting his parents at Benair on Thursday night.

Darren John Somerfield, 39, pleaded guilty in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Friday to two counts of serious assault on police and obstructing police.

The court was told Somerfield and his family were visiting his father and step-mother at Benair when an altercation broke out between father and son.

During this fight, windows were smashed and a vehicle damaged.

When police arrived at the home Somerfield confronted them as they were trying to take him into custody.

One officer was injured when Somerfield allegedly smashed a coffee cup into his forehead, causing bruising, swelling and a cut.

Magistrate Mark Bucknall placed Somerfield on a six month intensive correction order (ie. a jail term served in the community) on each charge, to be served concurrently, and ordered he pay $700 compensation to the injured police officer within 28 days.
