Mother's Day
Today is the second Sunday in May: Mother's Day. Different countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day on different days of the year because the event has many different origins. Some say Mother's Day first began in ancient Greece and emerged from a cult which was marked by the festival of Cybele (the mother of the gods) which was celebrated around Greece and the Greek colonies of Asia Minor, then later in Rome. In more modern times, Mother's Day began in the USA when it was copied from England by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War as a call to unite women against all wars. But in Australia, the day simply celebrates motherhood and thanking our Mums.
