Kilkivan & District Community Care Association has announced the winner of their “Ruby” raffle, the latest fundraising to support their recent purchase of the former Kilkivan Catholic Church building.

“Ruby” is 2024 Honda Pioneer 700 farm vehicle valued at close to $27,000.

Association president Rosie Fitzgerald said the lucky winner was Peter Weller, from Dagun in the Mary Valley region.

The vehicle, dubbed “Ruby” because of its bright red bonnet, was towed around the district for the past two months by volunteers who sold raffle tickets at weekend markets, cattle sales and on footpaths.

“The raffle was held as a major fundraiser towards the association’s purchase of the former Kilkivan Catholic Church, for an ageing-in-place project that incorporates a community hub,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

“We had a heart-warming response to the raffle despite the current cost-of-living crisis with 1000 tickets being sold locally and to people as far away as Tasmania and Canada because they had connections to local people.

“The raffle’s support epitomised the spirit of many people who would receive no direct benefit from the project but who strongly support a small rural community fighting for the opportunity to age-in-place.”

Mr Weller said he was thrilled to win.

“The photos don’t do Ruby justice, she’s bigger and more impressive than I imagined,” he said.

“I really hope the money can be raised to be able to have your community hub; it’s a great cause that I was happy to support.”
