Police have scaled back the search for missing South Burnett man, Luke Fergusson, after 10 days scouring properties and bushland in the Proston, Stalworth, Abbeywood and Kinleymore areas.

South Burnett Patrol Group Inspector Scott Stahlhut said although the investigation into the 28-year-old’s disappearance was continuing, the difficult decision had been made to scale back the search.

Support had been offered to Luke’s family.

“This outcome is heartbreaking for Luke’s loved ones and I offer them my condolences on behalf of the service, search party and the community,” Insp Stahlhut said.

“I want to thank the police, Defence Force, SES volunteers and civilians who worked in very difficult terrain over extended periods battling bouts of inclement weather in attempts to find Luke.

“I know how strong their resolve was to bring him home to his loved ones and I thank them their valiant efforts.

“Luke’s family have continually expressed their gratitude to everyone involved, particularly the local community who have turned out in force to help. Their support has buoyed Luke’s family during this most difficult time.”

Insp Stahlhut said an active missing person investigation would remain in place for Luke, though search efforts had now ended.

“I’d urge anyone with information regarding Luke’s disappearance, including sightings to come forward. Every piece of information, no matter how small, assists investigators,” he said.

“Locals and are urged to remain vigilant and continue to check their land including sheds for signs of Luke.”

The search for Luke began last Friday (June 9), and included aircraft, SES and rural fighters, police and volunteers on foot, quad bikes and horseback searching a five kilometre radius around the property where he was last seen on Proston-Abbeywood Road.

The operation also covered searches of nearby townships.

Temperatures in the area dropped to below zero on several nights while the search was under way.

Luke is Caucasian, approximately 175cm tall, with a proportionate build, brown hair and brown eyes.

He also has a medical condition and may appear disorientated.

Passing motorists who may have provided Luke with a lift have been urged to make contact.

Luke recently moved with his mother to the Proston area, and there are concerns he may have been trying to return to Rockhampton.
