South Burnett Regional Council issued an alert on Monday after a Council email account appeared to have been compromised by a hacker.

Thousands of South Burnett residents and businesses received an email, apparently from the Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Denise King, referencing an invoice from “SBCTC”.

Attached was an .html file linked to a spoofed online website seeking personal details.

Both the SBRC and South Burnett CTC were quickly alerted to the apparent phishing attack.

The SBRC notification warned the email could pose a threat to the computer networks of recipients.

“Please immediately delete the email and do not open any attachment or enter any personal details into the link,” the alert continued.

“South Burnett Regional Council apologises for any inconvenience.

“Council has taken immediate action to rectify and is committed to maintaining the cybersecurity of its employees and email recipients.  Investigations into the email breach is ongoing.”
