Deputy Premier and Health Minister Dr Steven Miles

August 29, 2020

New COVID-19 restrictions will come into force in the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service region – which includes the South Burnett – from 8:00am on Monday.

The new restrictions are identical to the orders already in place in the Brisbane City, Gold Coast City, Ipswich City, Logan City, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay, Redland City and Somerset council areas.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed on Saturday afternoon the new restrictions cover the South Burnett, Cherbourg, Western Downs, Toowoomba, Goondiwindi and Southern Downs council areas.

Gatherings inside homes and in non-organised gatherings without COVID Safe plans will be limited to 10 people.

Aged care homes and disability accommodation providers will be put into lockdown.

Arrangements with COVID Safe plans – for example, pubs, restaurants and organised events – can continue operating as usual.

The new restrictions follow the revelation on Friday night that two venues in the Toowoomba area had been added to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre cluster tracing list:

  • August 16 – The Southern Hotel, Toowoomba – 8:15am to 10:00am
  • August 16 – The Queens Park Markets, East Toowoomba – 10:00am-11:00am

Anyone who has been to these locations at these times should monitor their health and, if they develop even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms, get tested.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said there had been four more confirmed cases added to the Wacol cluster list since Friday, taking the total number of active cases in Queensland to 24.

Eighteen of these patients are in hospital.

The latest cases are:

  • A Queensland Corrections trainee, who lives at Greenbank
  • A woman, aged 30-39, who lives at Forest Lake and is the wife of a trainee previously diagnosed
  • A woman, aged 30-39, who lives at Pimpama and is the wife of a previously diagnosed Pimpama case
  • A woman, aged 60-69, who lives at Forest Lake, and is the wife of a previously reported case.

The Deputy Premier said the fact that three of the four latest cases were the result of household transmission emphasised the importance of restricting the number of visitors to households.

“Household spread is also what we know was a key driver of the early cases in that second wave in Victoria,” he said.

  1. Can someone explain why these restrictions are only in effect from 8:00am Monday instead of immediately? Doesn’t this delay mean there’s greater possibility of the virus being transmitted within our communities over the weekend?

“Aged care homes and disability accommodation providers will be put into lockdown”.

As everyone should know by now, people in these facilities are extremely vulnerable to the virus. I feel that anyone considering visiting any of them prior to the lockdown should seriously think again. Remember, anyone can have the virus and not display any symptoms. Our health authorities should be reminding people to act with “an abundance of caution”.

We don’t want to end up like Victoria.

  2. I think travel restrictions should have been in place weeks ago …. absolutely ridiculous that you’re only allowed so many people in gatherings but you can still drive all over the state. So people who are living where the virus is active at the moment, around Ipswich, can jump in their cars/caravans and drive all over Queensland? Ridiculous!
