Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young

August 28, 2020

The tightened COVID-19 restrictions announced last weekend have been extended to the Gold Coast after three more cases were confirmed in Queensland on Friday morning.

The new cases – two from Pimpama and one from Forest Lake – are linked to the Queensland Corrections Services Academy cluster and were identified after testing at the Academy was expanded.

Two recruits – a 33-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man from Pimpama – had been carpooling to the Academy and had been in the dining room at the Centre.

The third case is a 33-year-old man who attended a course at the Academy.

There are now 20 active cases in Queensland, including 15 from the two Wacol clusters, which are thought to be linked.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said there was a real risk the virus could have been spread on the Gold Coast.

The new Gold Coast restrictions will come into force at 8:00am on Saturday.

Gatherings inside homes and in non-organised gatherings without COVID Safe plans will be limited to 10 people.

Aged care homes and disability accommodation providers will also be put into lockdown.

Arrangements with COVID Safe plans can continue as usual.

These are the same restrictions which apply in the Local Government Areas of Brisbane City, Ipswich City, Logan City, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay, Redland City and Somerset council areas.

In the South Burnett – and the rest of Queensland – gatherings are limited to 30 people if a COVID Safe plan is not in place.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said 21,653 tests had been conducted in the past 24 hours.

Premier Palaszczuk said “schoolies” had been deemed a high-risk mass event so all organised events would be cancelled.

“So the schoolies that we have come to know over the years will not be able to go ahead in that form,” the Premier said.

However, the Premier said there was nothing wrong with small groups of people booking somewhere close to where they live.

“So long as they abide by those rules and regulations that are set in place for hotel accommodation, then there is nothing to worry about,” she said.

Gathering limits would apply on beaches and streets, and apartments would be required to maintain registers of guests for contact tracing.

An application by the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) to allow boarders from northern NSW to return home for the school holidays without having to quarantine on their return to Queensland has been refused.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young met with ICPA representatives on Thursday.

ICPA Queensland president Tammie Irons said it meant children who live outside the “border bubble” won’t be able to go home for the holidays.

“At this point those children will not be allowed to come back to their boarding schools unless they have been quarantined for two weeks. So that’s quite devastating for those families and is going to lead to them having to make a lot of decisions in the next couple of weeks about what boarding school holidays are going to look like for them,” she said.
