Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio has returned from the recent TSBE trade trip to China with a signed Memorandum of Understanding with a district in China.

The Yuecheng District forms the core of the municipality of Shaoxing City, within the Zhejiang Province.

It encompasses the central business area of Shaoxing and is home to 610,000 people.

“We see this agreement with the central district of Yuecheng, as a starting point for developing a broader relationship with Shaoxing, which is home to around 5 million people,” Mayor Antonio said.

The agreement outlines that the two sides will carry out exchanges and foster cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, culture, tourism, education, sports, health, and personnel to promote common prosperity and development.

“We were very well received by their civic leaders who were keen for us to formalise our willingness to begin this journey,” he said.

Shaoxing is known for its rice wine and manufacturing textiles, electronics, and energy-efficient lighting.

“This agreement will complement the MOU signed between Toowoomba Surat Basin Enterprise and Hangzhou Chamber of Commerce, one of China’s largest Chambers of Commerce,” he said.
