TAFE Queensland launched Australia’s largest vocational education scholarship program on Monday.

More than half a million dollars in industry-based scholarships will be available to help Queensland students meet their career goals over the next three years.

TAFE Queensland South West General Manager Trevor Schwenke said the new scholarship program was an exciting opportunity for people in the South Burnett.

“The industry-focused approach of the TAFE Queensland Scholarship program means scholarship recipients will receive training in the industries that matter to the local economy,” Mr Schwenke said.

“This will give them best chance of finding a job or progressing in their career.”

Two types of grants will be available: merit scholarships and access and equity scholarships.

The first is designed to reward students who excel in a TAFE Queensland study area, while the second is designed to help students who, for a range of reasons, may not otherwise have the opportunity to study.

Scholarships will be awarded to students in various study areas including hospitality, health services and automotive.

TAFE Queensland CEO Jodi Schmidt said the scholarships would remove some of the barriers to gaining a qualification.

“We know vocational education has the power to change people’s lives and help them achieve extraordinary things. TAFE Queensland has been doing it for more than 130 years,” Ms Schmidt said.

“These scholarships will provide an opportunity for people from all over Queensland to develop their skills and gain a qualification that is in demand in industry.”

Applications for the first round of TAFE Queensland scholarships are now open and will close on June 26.

A second round of scholarships will be available later in the year.

Scholarships will be offered to study TAFE Queensland qualifications from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma level, and will be available to both new and existing students.

Scholarships payments can be used to meet any costs associated with study.

The money can be used to cover course fees, purchase books and study materials, or reduce cost-of-living expenses.

Over the next three years, 100 scholarships worth $5000 each will be awarded to applicants across the State who are looking to begin or further their education at TAFE Queensland.
