Australia Day Awards - Proston
The South Burnett Regional Council will be presenting the region's 18th annual Australia Day Awards in a special ceremony at Proston Town Hall in Rodney Street, Proston, from 3:00pm to around 5:00pm today. The awards provide the community with an opportunity to acknowledge outstanding groups and individuals committed to improving the lifestyle of our region, and the award categories have been chosen give all the region's communities equal opportunity to nominate individuals and/or groups who've made special contributions to the area. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event, and the presentations will be followed by a free afternoon tea. More details? Phone the Council on 1300-789-279. NB. The awards ceremony is held on the eve of Australia Day to allow all nominees and attendees the chance to participate in the many Australia Day events on tomorrow.
14th Kings Royal Speedway - Kingaroy
The third (and final) day of the three-day Kings Royal - the biggest annual event on the South Burnett Speedway Club's calendar - will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds this afternoon and evening. Racing will start today at 4:00pm and continue until late tonight. As well as the lead-up races to the big final of the Kings Royal for Modifieds, there'll also be the final of the Production Sedans Stampede. Admission today is $30 for adults, $25 for students (with ID) and aged or disability pensioners; or $85 for a family of two adults and up to two students (children 12 and under, accompanied by an adult, are free). Three-day passes are also available at discounted rates. There'll be canteen facilities operating onsite and camping is available, too. Val Knight Memorial Scone Bake-Off - Manumbar
Manumbar Community Hall is hosting a bake-off today to see who can recreate the late Val Knight's famous scone recipe! There'll be scone judging and an auction; a "Local Aussie Legend" award; toad races; a licensed bar and backyard cricket. The fun will get under way at 3:00pm. At night, there'll be a barbecue dinner available for $15 per head. Bunya Mountains Markets
The Bunya Mountains Markets, held on the last Sunday of every month, will be running at Dandabah in the Bunya Mountains today. The markets feature up to 30 stands selling quality, locally produced fresh produce, arts and crafts and they'll be operating from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Local cafés like Poppies On The Hill and The Bunya Mountains Café will be offering special Market Day menus and morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. Walking trail maps will be available from both cafés, the Bunya Mountains General Store and market stalls if you'd like to take a stroll through the adjoining National Park. More details? Women's Cricket Development Day - Murgon
South Burnett Cricket has organised a women's/girls' Development Day today at Murgon Showgrounds. There are two events: Women's Development (ages 13 and up) from 10:00am to 1:00pm, no gear required; and an All Girls Pop Up Blast (ages 5-12) from 10:00am to 11:00am. To receive a free Blast pack, girls should register online. This is not just an opportunity for young girls starting out in cricket, it's also for mums and friends to come along and give the game a go. It will be a very social format focusing on fun and the development of basic skills.
Australia Day Weekend - Kumbia
The Kumbia Hotel will have Australia Day-themed activities from noon today, including cane toad races, a meat pie-eating competition and thong throwing plus a lamb-on-the-spit (roast lamb meals available to 8:00pm) and a $2 sausage sizzle.
Aussie Fun Day - Maidenwell
The Maidenwell Hotel is hosting an Aussie Fun Day from noon today as a fundraiser for the annual Maidenwell Music Mix festival. There'll be yabby races, thong throwing, darts games and the Coomba Falls Regatta (ie. "boat" races on land - teams of four!). From 4:00pm, there'll be live music by Natalie Fenton. More info? Sunday Roast Lunch - Wondai
Dimities Cottage at 49 Haly Street, Wondai (opposite the Wondai Regional Art Gallery) will be hosting a $20 per head BYO Sunday roast lunch from 12:00 noon today featuring roast lamb and seasonal vegetables followed by pavlova, tea and coffee and - yes! - no washing up afterwards. Prawn On The Lawn - Moffatdale
Dusty Hill Vineyard will be marking Australia Day with prawns on the lawn and all-you-can-eat canapes from 4:00pm until late this afternoon. There'll also be cocktails, beer, wine and spirits available to purchase in Prendergast's Irish Tavern. Live music will be by Paul Menzies, Craig Madden and the Radio Club Band. Cost is $129 a head for adults or $39 for children (15 years and younger). Children five and under are free. Free camping is available for ticketholders. Tickets can be booked online
Sunday Afternoon Poker - Kingaroy

Kumbia Museum
The Kumbia and District Historical Society's museum, located in the Federation Heritage Centre behind Kumbia Hall in Bell Street, will be open from 1:30pm to 3:30pm this afternoon. Free Sunday Lunch - Kingaroy
A free community lunch is available every Sunday from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at The Old Railway Station building, O'Neill Square, in Kingaroy. The Community Serving Community Meals Project is co-ordinated by the South Burnett Support Alliance and relies on volunteers from the local community.
