Federal MP Wants Wind Farm Axed

Member for Maranoa David Littleproud has called on the State Government to scrap the already-approved Tarong West Wind Farm near Ironpot.

Mr Littleproud, whose electorate of Maranoa includes the project site, posted a video on Facebook on Friday saying he had written a letter to Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie asking him to “call in” the project.

This follows meetings Mr Littleproud said he had held in the South Burnett last week where he heard concerns about the proposed temporary work camp near Kingaroy Airport as well as the wind farm itself.

He claimed the workers’ camp “doesn’t even have the support of the South Burnett Regional Council” although Council is yet to vote on it and councillors have made no public statements for or against the project.

South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff told News Corp that Mr Littleproud’s claim was incorrect, as the work camp project was still in the planning phase and had not been debated or voted on by the Council.

Mr Littleproud said the opposition to the camp meant it would have to be located on the wind farm site itself, creating an impact on water usage, biosecurity and road traffic.

“So the whole project, Tarong West, should be called in and rejected by the Deputy Premier,” Mr Littleproud said.

After a very enthusiastic advertising campaign by opponents to the work camp, the SBRC received almost 200 submissions in opposition to the proposal before the deadline closed on August 7.

Some of these expressed concerns about the future safety of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and other emergency flights into the airport if the camp went ahead.

The SBRC then wrote to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to determine if the proposed camp would have any adverse affect on the safety or operations of Kingaroy Airport.

“The proposal appears to be below the obstacle limitation surfaces for the airport meaning the buildings can be constructed as per Council DA requirements. CASA has no objection to the buildings. The Airport Manager is responsible for ensuring all developments in the vicinity of the airport do not infringe the obstacle limitation surfaces,” was the official reply on August 31.

CASA also noted that any requirements or recommendations from it should be incorporated into the lighting design.
