The proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project has passed another milestone, being officially declared a “co-ordinated project”.
The State Government says this declaration, by the Co-Ordinator-General, means an assessment of social, economic and environmental matters can now begin.
The project involves building a new upper reservoir, as well as a new dam wall that will replace the existing Borumba Dam wall.
The new dam wall would increase Lake Borumba’s storage capacity from 46 to 224 gigalitres.
The system would have the capacity to generate up to 2000MW of electricity for up to 24 hours at a time.
Geotechnical exploratory drilling has already started on the project.
