The official opening of Murgon’s fossil museum and art gallery project has been put back to July 15.

The complex, which is located in Macalister Street, was to open in May.

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien will do the official honours.

Murgon Business and Development Association (MBDA) president Leo Geraghty told the May meeting of the association the official name of the cultural complex had also been changed.

It will now be known as “55 Million Years Ago” rather than the “Ancient Songbird Centre”.

The reason for the name change is that researchers cannot confirm with certainty the Murgon fossils are from a songbird.

The complex will contain an art gallery, fossil museum, gift shop and “prehistoric” garden.

Initial plans for the $1.59 million Creative Country Association project were unveiled in May 2020.
