Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar are through to the quarterfinals of the Olympic beach volleyball competition after a nailbiting clash against a duo from China on Sunday night.

Clancy and Artacho del Solar appeared rattled by Wang Xinxin and Xue Chen early in the first set but recovered to take a narrow win, 22-20.

The Aussies appeared more confident in the second set, and at one stage had 10 match points, before finally clinching the win 21-13.

They finished in second place in their pool, earning them the spot in the quarterfinals.

Clancy and Artacho del Solar will now face the Canadian duo of Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes on Tuesday.

The Olympic beach volleyball is being played at Shiokaze Park, next to Tokyo Bay, and is being streamed live on the 7Plus network.
