Taliqua Clancy hit the winning the shot on Wednesday night to secure victory in the second of the Aussies’ preliminary rounds at the Olympic beach volleyball competition in Tokyo.

Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar defeated Viktoria Ori Toth and Marta Menegatti, from Italy, 2-0 after locking in narrow sets victories: 22-20 and 21-19.

The lead changed several times during the see-sawing contest, which was broadcast live on the 7Plus streaming network.

At one stage Clancy and Artacho del Solar had five match points but the Italians worked hard to get back into the game.

The Aussies, who are playing in Pool E of the competition, next face Russian competitors Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina on Friday.

The competition is being played at Shiokaze Park, next to Tokyo Bay.
