A family fun day will be held on the Bunya Mountains on Saturday, April 24, to help launch the community’s long-awaited Local Disaster Management Sub-Plan.
The “Community Resilience and Preparedness Day” is being organised by the Bunya Mountains Disaster Management Group (BMDMG).
It will start off with a detailed rundown of the new plan from 9:30am to 10:30am which will then be followed by family fun events from 11:00am until 2:00pm.
All Bunya Mountains residents and visitors are urged to attend.
The BMDMG is a collaboration between the South Burnett Regional Council and the Western Downs Regional Council, the two local governments which have responsibility for different sections of the mountains.
Work on developing the Sub-Plan has been under way since at least January 2020 when a bushfire burning in the foothills of the mountains again reminded residents of the dangers they would face if a fire roared up the range.
The Bunya Mountains Community Association and Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade organised multiple meetings with representatives from the two councils and other agencies, including the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service, as the plan was being developed.
The South Burnett Regional Council received a grant through the Queensland Bushfire – Category C – Flexible Funding Grants Program to assist with the preparation and implementation.
The project also enabled the purchase of a generator for the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade.
