Following last year’s extreme bushfire conditions, the Bunya Mountains community began seeking ways to ensure residents and visitors would be safe if a disaster struck the area.

Bunya Mountains Community Association Inc secretary Carol Weekes said one strategy discussed was developing a Bunya Mountains Local Disaster Management Committee Sub-Plan.

The Sub-Plan covers all key aspects of disaster management, including preparedness, prevention, response and recovery.

An initial meeting to develop the plan occurred on March 6.

Participants included representatives from both the Western Downs and South Burnett Local Disaster Groups, Emergency Services Queensland, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Bunya Mountains Community Association and the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade.

Carol said the development of the Sub-Plan has now proceeded to the next stage, following a second meeting at the Bunya Mountains on August 12.

That meeting reviewed a Draft Sub-Plan and suggested changes to ensure the document was easy to understand and implement.

“(It) will assist the community to work collaboratively, and in liaison with, emergency services and both Councils, to respond effectively should a disaster strike,” Carol said.

“When the Sub-Plan is fully developed, community education and information-sharing activities will occur.”
