Well-known local resident Shirley Law has been selected to fill the vacancy on Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council caused by the recent death of Cr Alana Purcell.

Cr Law was among a number of community members who nominated for the position.

As the vacancy fell within months of the next full Council election, a by-election was not held; instead, Cr Law was appointed by resolution at the September Council meeting held on Tuesday.

She will serve alongside Mayor Arnold Murray, Deputy Mayor Elvie Sandow and councillors Tom Langton and James Saltner until the March 2020 Local Government elections.

Cr Law said she was surprised but grateful to be selected as the new councillor.

She was born in Cherbourg and recently moved back into the community after living in Murgon for many years.

Cherbourg Council has also begun the process of selecting a new Chief Executive Officer following the retirement of long-serving CEO Warren Collins.

Fifteen applications have been received for the role after it was advertised.

Corporate Services Manager Chatur Zala has been Acting CEO until the vacancy is filled.

An announcement is expected in November.
