The Room Motels complex in Kingaroy has been given Council approval to expand from 36 to 56 units, the motel’s second expansion since it opened in 2012

Kingaroy’s Room Motels in Youngman Street has been given approval for its second expansion in seven years.

The motel is owned by a Brisbane-based company who chose the South Burnett to pioneer a new way of building motels from prefabricated components when they opened in 2012.

At last week’s South Burnett Regional Council meeting, Councillors approved an application to increase the size of the motel from 36 to 56 units.

The extra 20 units will be built on an adjoining block at 74 Youngman Street on the northern side of the existing complex.

Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year.

The latest approval follows an earlier expansion in 2015, when the motel added eight units to the original 28.

The new units will be of similar design to the motel’s existing units and assembled from prefabricated components – a method of construction the company pioneered to slash traditional motel building costs.

Since Room Motels opened its first motel in Kingaroy, the company has also opened a second motel in Gatton after building, then selling, the Meridian Motel in Moura.

The company is also believed to be examining the feasibility of building a third motel in Gympie.

Room Motels’ Kingaroy complex has proven popular with the business traveller market.

In 2014, the company won the Startup Business category of the South Burnett Business Excellence Awards.
