A classic ‘widow maker’ branch snapped off unexpectedly from a tree in River Road on Friday at lunchtime, blacking out large parts of Kingaroy … the heavy eucalypt branch snapped multiple powerlines

March 2, 2018

More than 900 Ergon Energy customers in the Kingaroy area were left without power when a tree branch severed multiple powerlines in River Road on Friday.

The large branch fell suddenly just after noon in still, hot weather.

On February 14, a similar incident in the same spot during a storm damaged high and low voltage powerlines, causing an eight-hour blackout.

Friday’s blackout was of shorter duration – about seven hours – but disrupted businesses in the Kingaroy Industrial Estate, nearby houses and eastern parts of the CBD.

Ergon Energy crews, firefighters and police were quickly on the scene.
