Local AFL player Shaleise Law had the opportunity to play before a home crowd last weekend when the Brisbane Lions played its first AFLW game in Queensland.
The unbeaten Lions took on Collingwood at the new South Pine Sports Complex in Round 3 of the inaugural women’s competition.
They led throughout the game to record an easy win over the Magpies.
The Lions have won now won their first three outings, against Melbourne, Fremantle and Collingwood, and are just behind the Adelaide Crows on the ladder for and against.
Queensland Sport Minister Mick de Brenni congratulated the players on their first home game.
Speaking at the opening of the South Pine Sports Complex at Brendale, Mr de Brenni said the AFLW competition had exceeded expectations.
“I think some people have been a bit surprised at how popular the competition has been so far,” Mr de Brenni said.
“But it’s no surprise to Queenslanders. This state is a powerhouse for football, and given the quality and the dedication of women’s AFL, a top-tier competition like this is well due.”
The Lions’ next match is on Saturday. They will be returning to the South Pine Sports Complex to take on the GWS Giants at 3:35pm.
