Kingaroy district residents connected to the Kingaroy water supply should have begun enjoying improved water quality recently.

Water Portfolio chair Cr Ros Frohloff told Wednesday’s Council meeting the first stage of the new $7.5 million Gordonbrook Water Treatment Plant is now operational, and the town is being supplied with water treated at the plant.

“This is a major milestone for the project,” Cr Frohloff said.

“Council operators have been producing water with the new plant and it’s providing great quality water.”

The second stage of the project has now been commissioned.

It will involve decommissioning the old water treatment plant, converting the existing clarifier into extra clear water storage, and bringing new water pumps online to transfer treated water to the Mt Woorolin reservoir.

The new plant has been built by contractors Aquatec Maxcon, who are also building Kingaroy’s new Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The company was awarded contracts to build both projects in October 2014.

During construction, the project has had to surmount a number of obstacles including switching between Gordonbroook and Boondooma water several times, and a lightning strike last November.

Murgon residents should expect better water from their own treatment plant soon, too.

Contractors M2O have started work on the plant, and will begin by cleaning the plant’s third filter train and removing old filter media.

After this they will make modifications to the train, then install backwash storage tanks and pumps, and carry out other electrical modifications before bringing it back into service.

Once this first stage is done, the remaining two filter trains will be taken offline for refurbishment, too.

During this period Murgon will be supplied from the third train only.

The project is on track for completion in July.
