A proposal which would have excluded Proston from the Electorate of Nanango at the next State Election has been dropped after a submission from the South Burnett Regional Council.
Earlier this year maps for the proposed redistribution of Queensland electorates were published by the independent Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC).
Under this proposal, the Nanango Electorate would have lost Proston, Durong, Mondure, Goomeri and Kilkivan to the Electorate of Callide, currently held by the LNP’s Bryson Head. It would have gained Crows Nest and Ravensbourne from the Condamine Electorate, currently held by the LNP’s Pat Weir.
The QRC invited objections to the proposed new boundaries.
Mayor Kathy Duff wrote to the QRC saying the new boundaries would divide the South Burnett.
“The village of Proston is separated from the village of Hivesville when that community work (sic) closely together,” the mayor wrote.
“I would like to see the whole of our region in the seat of Nanango rather than a small area now in Callide. The local Member for Callide has a large geographical area and I am concerned that the small part that has been cut off from our region will struggle to get a voice.
“It does not make any sense with the small population that has been cut out of the seat of Nanango to divide our region and the community of interest.”
The QRC appears to have taken Mayor Duff’s submission on board.
The final redistribution map (see below) shows Proston within the Nanango Electorate alongside some other South Burnett localities near the boundary with Callide.
Also remaining in Nanango are Ballogie, Barlil, Byee, Chahpingah, Chelmsford, Cobbs Hill, Coverty, Dangore, Hivesville, Ironpot, Kawl Kawl, Keysland, Kinleymore, Leafdale, Melrose, Merlwood, Sunny Nook, Tableland and Wheatlands.
However Cloyna, Durong, Glenrock, Manyung, Marshlands, Mondure, Stonelands, Warnung, Windera and Wooroonden have been shifted into the Callide Electorate.

Elgin Vale, Tansey, Goomeri, Kilkivan and Manumbar have also been moved to Callide while Nanango has gained Coalbank, Crows Nest and Hampton, which had been part of the Nanango Electorate prior to 2017.
These new changes have now been gazetted but will not take effect until the State Election in October 2028.
Redistributions are carried out every few years to ensure each electoral district contains a similar number of voters.
The last redistribution was carried out in 2017.
