The State Government has invited feedback on the draft Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan and Infrastructure Plan, a 20-year blueprint for growth across the region.
It sets out the strategic direction across key themes including housing, economy, agriculture, ecotourism and liveable communities, as well as supporting co-ordinated planning for transport, water, energy, digital connectivity and social and community infrastructure.
The draft plan – which covers the Bundaberg, Cherbourg, Fraser Coast, Gympie, North Burnett and South Burnett council areas – sets a target of delivering about 48,945 extra homes by 2046.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said having local voices in the regional planning process was key to a strong plan for the region’s future.
“The current Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan developed by the former Labor Government was not developed in partnership with local government and as a result, was never implemented,” he said.
“We are resetting the planning partnership with Councils and communities, giving them a seat at the table and a genuine voice in shaping their region’s future after being shut out for a decade under Labor.”
Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the draft plan recognised the strong connections between communities across the Wide Bay Burnett.
“This plan gives our regional communities confidence that we’re listening to them and we have a plan for their future. This is about ensuring better co-ordination for our long-term infrastructure needs across the region,” Ms Frecklington said.
Member for Gympie Tony Perrett said co-ordinated planning was essential to supporting communities, industry and economic growth across the region.
Public consultation for the draft Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan and Infrastructure Plan 2026, will be open until Monday, September 14, 2026.
