Earlier this year, the Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery hosted three workshops to encourage local artists to practise a very classical art skill … sketching and painting nudes.
The weekend “life study” workshops were held in March, April and May, under the tutelage of Sunshine Coast artist Don Milner with assistance by local artists Cherry Carroll and Fran Van Vegchel.
The life models were hired from a specialist agency.
Initially, the models had to hold their poses while the participants made quick sketches.
This was then extended to longer poses and the creation of more detailed artworks as the workshops progressed.
Cherry said between 11 and 13 artists attended every workshop.
“Life study workshops are not common in rural areas so this was a golden opportunity for local artists to hone their skills, no matter their experience level,” Cherry said.
The results of the workshops will be on display at the Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery in August.
Don Milner will be returning for the exhibition, too, with his own works – including portraits, landscapes and seascapes – filling the walls in the main gallery.
Don said he had brought along 24 of his artworks for display, all of which will be available to purchase.
The opening night will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, August 7.
