South Burnett Eagles made it through to Sunday’s Plate Final at the prestigious 47th Battalion Central Region rugby league carnival in Bundaberg, but weren’t quite good enough to bring home the trophy.

For the past few years, South Burnett players have been part of a combined Burnett Brahmans team, but this year were able to compete under their own South Burnett Eagles’ strip.

They began strongly on Saturday at Salter Oval, downing the Central Burnett Brumbies 20-12.

(Like the Eagles, the Brumbies were part of the Brahmans squad last year).

Eagles’ tries were scored by Cherbourg Hornets’ Dominique Sandow (2) Steven Walsh and Jonathan Walsh. George Fisher kicked two conversions.

In their second game, the Eagles came up against Northern Districts, which they defeated 28-14.

Eagles’ try scorers in this game were Steven Walsh (2), Dominique Sandow and Kingaroy Red Ants’ Connor Sullivan and Harry Perrett. George Fisher kicked three conversions while Dom Sandow kicked one.

The two wins earned the Eagles a spot in the Plate Final against the South West Stockmen,

The Stockmen were victorious, 48-6,  overwhelming the South Burnett side in the first half but the Eagles held their own in the second stanza.

Tiai Tuiloma, coming off the bench, scored the Eagles’ try after the break, which was converted by George Fisher.

This year’s 47th Battalion carnival was split into three divisions: Men’s Trophy, Men’s Plate and Women’s Trophy.

The Men’s Trophy Final was won by the Sunshine Coast Falcons over Bundaberg Bears, 18-4, while the Toowoomba Clydesdales defeated the Sunshine Coast Falcons 26-4 to win the Women’s Trophy.
