Cr Deb Dennien, Deputy Mayor Jane Erkens and Mayor Kathy Duff have been appointed as the interim management committee of the Nanango Race Club

February 3, 2025

The future of the Nanango Race Club looks a little brighter following the appointment of an interim management committee for the club.

And there is even a chance that one of the three cancelled 2025 race meetings could be restored.

South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff, Deputy Mayor Jane Erkens and Cr Deb Dennien – all members of the Association – were appointed last week with the consent of past president Andrew Green.

Mayor Duff and Cr Dennien both have long links with the local racing industry.

Correspondence sent to Nanango Race Club members from Mayor Duff said Racing Queensland was relying on Rule 13 of the club’s Constitution in regards to filling casual vacancies to allow this to happen.

However, the Constitution also only allows for the election of permanent committee members at an Annual General Meeting, which is not due until September.

The interim committee would have to remain in place until this time.

The letter to Members stated the committee needs to be functioning by February 14 for Racing Queensland to reconsider if the May 17 race meeting should be returned to Nanango.

This would only occur if Racing Queensland was “comfortable” the interim committee was capable of running the event successfully.

Members have been invited to put their names forward for the unpaid positions of president, vice-president, treasurer or Board member before February 7.

The interim management committee would consider the applications and advise the successful applicants before February 10.

The new appointees would be expected to attend the next meeting of the committee which would be held on or before February 14.

“Hoping to move the club forward in a positive manner,” the letter concluded.

One Response to "Glimmer Of Hope For Nanango Races"

  1. While it’s good to finally see some movement for the club I can see this creating more drama. Councillors cherry-picking from nominations for club positions is bound to upset some people. Credit to Kathy, Deb & Jane for taking this on in an effort to save the club, though. I don’t envy you one bit.
