Human remains found on a property at Booubyjan on October 20 have been confirmed as belonging to missing 14-year-old girl Krystal Cain.
Krystal and her father Lenny, 40, were travelling from Victoria to visit her grandparents in Agnes Water when their Toyota Camry was caught in flash flooding on the Burnett Highway, near the Murgon-Gayndah Road intersection, in the early hours of January 8, 2022.
The pair managed to escape their vehicle as it was swept away and made it safely to a tree.
However, Krystal was again washed away.
Her injured father was rescued the next morning, still clinging to a tree, and taken to Bundaberg Hospital via a rescue helicopter.
A desperate search using police, SES volunteers, divers, specialist dogs and the Polair helicopter failed to find any sign of Krystal at the time.
Lenny Cain broke the heartbreaking news on Facebook on Thursday:
“To your beautiful community of Goomeri and surrounds. So as you might be aware that human remains had been located in Booubyjan approximately six weeks ago.
“After forensic testing, these remains are confirmed as my missing daughter Krystal. So after almost three years I get to lay my beautiful daughter to rest.
“I have arranged a funeral service for Krystal which will be 10/01/25 at 10:00am.
“The service will be held at Des Allem Funerals in Phoebe Ct, Bundaberg. All welcome to attend.
“I am forever grateful to your community for all the love and beautiful messages to me over this horrific period. It has been a enormous help to me and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart I will never forget how much your comments meant to me and helped me to get through this.”
